My WIP for the 2K game competition

http://spritemultiplex.googlepages.com/loader.rar
run with
bload"loader.bin",r

Explore the maze and look for the switch that turns off all the defective robots.

ATM
1) the switch is missing :-)
2) bullets for MC are missing (also robot testing collision of bullets against robots)
3) robot explosions (but some code is there)
4) MC die (now you just start the game again)

Q to exit to basic

Sorry for confusing Job's and Jos'b ....

What concerns viejo, I think he's very too busy at the moment.

I know that is insane; but if you're seeking some more bytes at all cost you can try to shuffle the order in what the subroutines are in memory. Simply changing their positions you can get back dozens of bytes :)

Also that MSX-O-Mizer thing sounds interesting, it's really better than BB or Pletter?, and how about speed (although decompress an executable is not a task that needs too much speed)?

Btw, you're doing a great work with the game!

Yes, MSX-O-Mizer is better than pletter5b.
The depacker routine is shorter and the compression gain, on my 2K files (i.e. pure asm code and few data), is about 4%-8% depending on the size and on the type of data. Actually I've found even larger gains when compressing larger files (12% of gain against pletter for screen 2 images).

The contra are:
1) it is slower, but I cannot say how much wrt pletter
2) it needs some bytes of ram as temporay buffer

Now, with the new 1.4 version, it's even 5 bytes shorter :-)

Nice game, Artrag! I love those games where you don't see what has not been explored. They bring me memories of roguelike games too (hmmm... everything seems to remember me roguelikes ;-) )

What about "true" visibility updates, with line of sight and so? Too complex for a 2KB game?

Anyway, I like the game.

True visibility would be great, I have been thinking to that for long time
I would need a "ray trace" to plot the light spot leaving in shadows the
part of room behind the walls.

It can be done but not in this 2K game, where there are just 111 bytes left
to be invested in
1) MC bullets
2) collisions of bullets with robots
3) robot explosion
4) game goal management
